What is JUVÉDERM?
A safe, long-lasting, non-invasive solution for skin rejuvenation and face reshaping.
JUVÉDERM (Allergan, Inc., Irvine, CA) was approved by the FDA in June 2006 for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds (such as nasolabial folds).
JUVÉDERM® is a long-lasting, non-surgical option that contains highest concentration of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid, or HA, is a naturally occurring substance that delivers volume to the skin. It is a smooth gel, non-animal dermal filler offering a natural look and feel, and long-lasting results.
The Juvéderm™ line comprises a collection of fillers, such as JUVÉDERM VOLUMA, JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA®, JUVÉDERM® Ultra.
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC provides lift and contour to the cheek area.
JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC corrects moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds for a smoother appearance to the face for adults over the age of 21.
JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC is designed for lip augmentation and for correction of perioral lines, often called "lipstick lines" in adults over the age of 21.
JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC adds more fullness and plumps thin lips—whether your lips have thinned over time or you simply want fuller lips—in adults over the age of 21. It is also great for erasing moderate to deep lines around the mouth (nasolabial folds).
HA injections are the second most frequently performed aesthetic procedure in the United States.
What is JUVÉDERM® used for?
To add volume to the cheek area
Erase moderate to deep wrinkles and facial lines (nasolabial folds)
Correct the deeper facial grooves and furrows
To add volume to the lips
Reshape lips and face
Reduce the Tear Trough
To diminish effects of photo aging
To diminish scars, including acne scars
How long does JUVÉDERM® fillers last?
Compared to other fillers, JUVÉDERM lasts longer because it’s the only dermal filler currently available with the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid and a special formulation process. This process creates a smooth gel that flows easily into the skin, spreads evenly, creating smooth, natural looks.
JUVÉDERM dermal fillers provide natural-looking, long-lasting results. Clinical studies showed that with optimal treatment, results last for:
> up to 2 years – for JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC, used on the cheek area
> up to 18 months – for JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC, used on facial wrinkles
> up to 1 year – for JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC, used on lips
> up to 1 year – for JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC, used on lips and to correct nasolabial folds
One study that focused on the “Effectiveness of Juvéderm Ultra dermal filler in the treatment of severe nasolabial folds”, found that at 24 weeks, 96% of nasolabial folds treated with Juvéderm had maintained clinically significant correction, and 81% maintained the correction for 1 year or more. Results were similar for those subjects with follow-up through 48 weeks after repeated treatment.
The median volume required for repeated treatment with Juvéderm was significantly less than that for initial treatment (0.7 ml versus 1.6 ml).
Compared to collagen-based fillers, JUVÉDERM, a HA filler, lasts significantly longer, as reported by three studies.
JUVÉDERM fillers are homogeneous, nonparticulate with the highest concentration of HA - 24 mg/ml.
What influences the cosmetic outcome?
There are two categories of factors influencing the outcome of dermal fillers: injector-related and patient-related. On the injector’s side, technique and choice of filler influence the final result. On the patient's side, oxidative or inflammatory status, metabolism, the health of the skin, and inherent movement patterns all affect the outcome. For example, a heavy smoker is like "a walking electron" who generates a lot of free radicals, which accelerates the skin aging.
A great advantage of HA products is that they are reversible with hyaluronidase or simply by "nicking and squeezing."
How safe are JUVÉDERM® dermal fillers?
Several safe assessment studies have found that the only adverse reactions were at the injection site, were always short in duration (less than 7 days) and mild in severity. Treatment site reactions and side effects were similar for all fillers, HA and collagen.
Normal, transitory reactions include: needle marks, pain, itching, bruising, discoloration, pruritus, erythema or edema, acne eruptions, lumps/bumps, and dryness.
Other potential problems include: excessive fullness, slight hyperpigmentation, visible or palpable accumulation of fat.
According to manufacturer’s reports, side effects for JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC lasted 2 to 4 weeks; for JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC, and JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC side effects lasted 14 days or less, and for JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC, most side effects lasted 30 days or less.
JUVÉDERM® has collagen-generating properties
Several studies have revealed that hyaluronic acid fillers may stimulate new collagen synthesis in the skin, enhancing its properties as a filler. Study authors suggest that mechanical stretching of fibroblasts by the HA induced collagen production. This, explains why patients often report improvements in their appearance up to 12 months after receiving HA fillers.
